## Session Summary
> [!tldr] [[013_20240804 A scuttling horror in South Soffit]]
> Lightkeeper Moore assigned us our next mission, which was to help Madam Fidovich investigate some noises and disturbances that three residents of The Lawn in South Soffit had complained about. Strangely, all three of the residents had withdrawn their complaints and blamed the boys from the Clara House, an orphanage. We went down to South Soffit and interviewed the first two complainants, Elgar Twellington and Mystaff Vemal, both of whom happened to be missing metal objects on their properties. We also met a smoker who rudely told me I'm not welcome in South Soffit. ^summary

## Log
%%
[[Rezin Nelson]] is back! How do we all feel about having him back in the game?
%%
We advance! We choose *Interdisciplinary* as a circle ability.
We tell [[Lightkeeper Jezebel Moore]] about the warehouse where we found the artifact. But we don't tell her about the gem or our interaction with [[The Phoenix Gang]] .
We go to [[South Soffit]]. It's several times bigger than [[The Eaves]]. It's like a cube underneath The Eaves. People live in different levels below it and some have never seen the sun!
When we get to [[Madam Lia Fidovich]], it's clear to us that Jezebel hasn't been telling us the whole truth.
> [!abstract] A Scuttling Horror
> Residents of the ground floor of South Soffit have reported disturbing clicking and thudding sounds from outside their homes at night. Those who investigate saw creatures, much larger than a person, scuttling away quickly into the shadows. It’s probably nothing.
Madam Fidovich isn't really thrilled to see us. She didn't realise we'd be the ones assigned to this case. Lightkeeper Moore doesn't really like Fidovich that much, so maybe that's why she assigned us to Fidovich.
Eric has been to South Soffit before he lives really close-- he grew up in [[The Eaves]].
![[cosm-south-soffit.png]]
South Soffit is about 20 stories tall.
- Pillars are keeping it up
- [[The Oak]] is the central, tallest pillar that goes all the way up to the arch. Very wide in diameter.
- Five other smaller, narrower pillars:
- [[The Pine]]
- [[The Holly]]
- [[The Spruce]]
- [[The Maple]]
- [[The Birch]]
- When you give an address in South Soffit, you tend to give it based on the pillar you're nearest (like "Holly northwest")
- Two ways from South Soffit up to The Eaves
- [[The High Steps]], a stairway
- [[The Conveyer]]: a big freight elevator. You need to go up a big road called [[The Belt]], which is controlled by [[The Periphery]]. This is how visitors mainly get to South Soffit. Important visitors don't want to climb all these stairs. It's closely controlled because The Eaves has high security. It's not really for locals.
- There are three major levels.
- Top level: [[The Attic]]. Home to the poorest residents of South Soffit. It's the most dangerous because it's the highest from the ground. It's the smokiest because all the smoke gathers there. There's a lot of electrical wiring there that makes it a bit unsafe. Most dwellings hang there like a wasp's nest.
- Home of the Wasps/"Butterflies"
- [[The Nests]]
- home of the "Birdies", most dynamic group
- buildings and walkways attached to Pillars Electrical wires
- [[The Margin Pub]] (near ground)
- [[Candela HQ in South Soffit|Candela HQ]] (in middle)
- [[Thread & Fur Taxidermy]] (in middle)
- [[The Lawn]]: nicest level. These are the wealthiest of the servant class. People have nice homes and lawns. The fact that they have lawns is already a symbol of wealth, because it means they get sunshine.
- Home of the "Toads”/“Sunflowers” (because they don't do anything but hop around on the ground), wealthiest and most established residents
- [[The High Steps]] (beginning) - stairway to the Eaves
- [[The Conveyer]] (South Soffit stop) - elevator to the Eaves
- [[The Belt]] - road to the Conveyer
- There are big windows in the walls. One in the east and one in the west. (Clerestory = wall with window in it) These are the only sources of sunlight.
- [[Sunrise Clerestory]]
- [[Sunset Clerestory]]
- People in the Lawn used to get light without obstruction, but when The Nests got a bit more built out, they got less. They don't like each other.
- People in The Eaves own their land and the land below it like a shaft. But Eric knows it's kind of true but it's not that simple. It's not that practical to have a vertical shaft that you own. They developed a legal principle called the Sunbeam: the line of ownership moves around as your servants move around. You own where your servants live. They always owe you rent (!) and they can't get away from you.
- The assignment is in The Lawn. People there complained about clicking sounds, but only at night. But those complaints were withdrawn. There were three complaints
- Madam Fidovich fought for this to remain a case. Most people at Candela Obscura were happy to look the other way since nobody has died. Jezebel has used us to kind of dig at Fidovich.
- Fidovich said that if we want to know any more about the neighbourhood, go to The Margin Pub. It's also one of the only tourist spots in South Soffit. It's got good cheap liquor so people come for that. The proprietor of the Margin Pub is [[Kailey Zhang]] (she/they).
- Eric knows [[The Clara House]] ([[Clara Bellecourt]]) has a bunch of rowdy boys that sneak into bars. Maybe Eric hung out with some of those teenage boys. They brought him along on one of their monster hunts. This was about 10 years ago. They were just starting to make plans to dig one of the subways through South Soffit-- this is difficult to do because of the logistics. They had to dig deep into the rock. These boys called themselves [[Monster Hunters]]. They were probably just making stuff up, Eric thought. They would go into these tunnels being dug for the subway. Eric dipped his toe in and drank a bit with these kids, but he then drew the line and didn't go with them to the unfinished tunnels.
- Things we could pursue
- Talk to the people who are making the complaints.
- Go to The Margin Pub.
- Go upstairs to The Eaves and get more information by talking to the families whose servants are giving the complaints.
Three people who made the complaints
- [[Elgar Twellington]]
- [[Mystaff Vemal]]
- [[Alma Baquiran]]
We go to Elgar Twellington.
- bungalow with decent-sized lawn. Fence around it.
- middle-aged man
- He's not immediately willing to tell us about the complaints. He says it's just the boys from the Clara House. He wants us to have our superiors close down the House.
- I realise he's not doing this out of fear. He has his own agenda and he's pushing that. He says he just changed his own mind. He clearly wants to just talk about the boys from the Clara House.
- Tarrin sees that one of the light fixtures in his property is missing.
- Ash just kicks over one of the fences. Tarrin wanted to do it anyway. Tarrin flips Elgar off (he's peeking at them from a window). Ash steals a light fixture.
- Eric says that The Periphery doesn't come here. That's why Fidovich pushed for us to be here. She knows they don't have any other options.
[[Mystaff Vemal]]
- middle-aged woman
- We hear that she's in the middle of dinner behind her.
- She seems more polite. Elgar was more confrontational and belligerent.
- She says it's the boys from the Clara House too.
- She has a horse that she can ride around. It's in a barn. There's the remains of something there. Something metal. There's only a little of it left. Looks like a metal weathervane.
- There's someone leaning against the fence, [[Eddy|smoking a cigarette]]. I ask him for a cigarette, but he refuses and blows smoke in my face. Says I'm not welcome here. I grab his cigarette, take a long drag, and while I blow it back in his face I say "That's just too bad. Because I'm not going anywhere." ^e6da4f
