[[Clara]] had never heard of the caves, or her kids going there. Eric revealed this by mistake when talking to her. Eric uses a Control roll to try to distract Clara. Sits back, opens a few buttons of shirt — he’s been working out! Mixed success: tips chair completely over. Was trying to distract her with his machismo, instead distracts her with his physical comedy. She stops asking about the caves, at least! She has to help him up, perhaps sees him less as an authority, than someone she has to attend to. #### Tarrin Tarrin’s last scene was listening in to the children talk in the main room. She wanted to go on the adventures that the boys were talking about. #### Ash Ash is looking around outside Clara House, exploring. Survey roll, full success. - Sees bits of shiny metal farther out, draped on the buildings and walkways - People who he sees are not hostile. They are coming home from their work shifts above in the Eaves. ### Dinner All invited to dinner at Clara House. Clara is overseeing the bedlam of many, many children all eating together. Food is pretty bad, since it’s cook by children: overcooked meat, undercooked potatoes. But it fills you up. Clara uses formal dining setup, trying to be a good role model to the kids. Some try to follow, many just do their own thing. Eric would also know how to eat in that formal fashion. Tarrin feels like she’s a kid trying to mimic Eric and Clara’s polished mannerisms. Clara is trying to tell the group about the Clara House history, but most of them are just trying to glean more from the kids’ conversations around them. Maybe only Calliope could take a test on the history Clara is providing later and pass it. The house didn’t start with Clara, but she found that giving it a face made the donors more eager to give, hence: Clara House. - Eric: Focus, full success - Tarrin: Survey, mixed success - Ash: Survey, mixed success, While the kids try Clara, and push the boundaries, and they could overwhelm her if they wanted…they also rely on her. She feeds them, clothes them, educates them. Protects them. So while they’re kids, this is in some ways a kind of co-dependent Circle. Our group overhears: the kids who are going to explore the tunnels are meeting at the come-like base of the central Oak pillar, Spruce-ward side. (Directions are always in terms of the outer pillar, not north-south-east-west. There are 5 outer pillars.) Clara talks about [[Ser Benjamin Lao]], a name the group hasn’t heard before. The Laos are one of the oldest families in Newfaire, immigrated early when the location was still thought to be devastated by the Cataclysm. Oldest of old money. Ser Lao gives to Clara House, enough to help keep it going, but not an excessive amount: Eric’s money is still welcome. [[Elgar Twellington]] works for Ser Lao, but See Lao has never talked about shutting down Clara House the way Elgar constantly does. While some servants in South Soffit just parrot their masters’ talking points, Elgar seems to be independent of Ser Lao? Eric asks about the graffiti the group has seen. Clara: Jermaine drew for a while, but luckily he’s been redirected to only drawing permitted murals, esp. in the Lawn. So he’s someone you could talk to about it, if you wanted. (Nobody followed up on it.) Some kids are talking to our group. One says to Ash, “You’re so old!” Eric: has Clara ever felt threatened? - Physically? Sometimes there are children who are bullies, but I give them the best chances I can. - Sometimes there are accidents, esp. for newcomers to Nests. The Nests are inherently dangerous, being up so high, with few railings. - Politically? It helps being in South Soffit, keeps it hidden from the busybodies who exist elsewhere. Literally hidden from the sight of the rest of the city by the Eaves overhead. So it’s a balancing act (so to speak). ### Post-Dinner Did Eric go to the tunnels when he was younger? Let’s say yes, but didn’t go in. So he’d know that there are service buildings near each of the outer pillars. Hatches from there into the tunnels. The group heads out to the service entrance Spruce-ward before the kids, to avoid getting caught following them. When they get there: - Tarrin: Survey roll to find a good hide spot. Mid-stakes. Will spend a drive. - 5 dice, mixed success. - Brain mark. They find a good spot to hide behind the brick wall the demarcates the property, in a shadowy spot. The boys come by in a bit. They go straight for the hatch that’s inside the property. It’s supposedly locked, but the boys just pull off the lock, it was apparently already broken. They go down it, with a small flashlight. Our group follows. And we end early here Since Prey had to bow out. We’ll continue the adventure next session! %% # Text Elements # Drawing ```json {"type":"excalidraw","version":2,"source":"https://github.com/zsviczian/obsidian-excalidraw-plugin/releases/tag/2.0.25","elements":[],"appState":{"theme":"dark","gridSize":null,"viewBackgroundColor":"#ffffff"}} ``` %%
