It's about 2pm now. We go to [[Nine Irons]]. It's a Periphery outpost separated from the city. It's on a cliff. The Brinkley Penitentiary, or "The Brink". It's on a plateau. Brick walls and a generally awful place to be. The staff here are the regular staff at The Penitentiary. They're not super professional and not nice at all. There's a commotion here. The guards say it's nothing to worry about. Tarin hears that they're chanting something: "Duncan". Some of them make a fist gesture with one or two hands as we look at them. They seem angry. Not everyone is doing this, though. It's only about half of the prison. The guards seem a bit frightened, but she's putting up a brave front and telling us not to worry about it. We know it's about [[Duncan “Fists” Walters]] whom we know from the newspapers. He's the leader of a gang and he has been incarcerated a long time. The guard that's with us says that that's Duncan's gang, [[The Knuckle-breakers]]. The guards says they've kept control of the prisoners by playing the Knuckle-breakers against the other guard. That worked while Duncan was alive, but now that he's dead, it's harder... There was a magic trick here, but the guard wasn't here. "One of the sisters survived", though, and we can talk to her. A magician lady came in with her bear. They somehow lost the bear inside the prison-- they don't much care about people getting out once they're in. They think the bear is still alive though. [[Sisters of Perpetual Mercy]] are a do-gooder religious organization. The guard is saying the name with a bit of a sneer. They lobbied hard enough with the right people for advocating for rights for prisoners. They're always trying to get the prisoners things like more exercise. This time they arranged entertainment for the prisoners: a magician named [[Kira Zebrowski]], the youngest of the magicians. She is an animal magician. [[Sister Tala Abu-Bakr]] (BAK-ree), tough, unafraid [[Sister Vree Asichi]], young scared - didn't understand much about the world yet, and she's the one that's still alive. Kira was slightly mentored by Adam, but he doesn't really think animal magic is very prestigious. I give Jared an Intuition Drive to let him spot something about people. They prisoners who are angriest are the ones that are the most afraid. Some people are also bandaged. One of the injured say it was the monster of a bear. The book that Adam has and was from Kwan is called: [[Higher-Order Ceremonies and Rituals by Trafalgar Nguyen]]. Ash looks at his book which is called [[The Science Behind Magick]]. All magick comes from [[The Flare]] and the Bleed from the Flare. That's why it's all bad. There are lots and lots and lots of bloodstains. The body of the magician Kira is still here too. Adam thinks that maybe the dark energy went into the bear. Adam looks at the body of the magician and takes some animal treats. And there's also a bell. Its name is Yogi. I talk to Vree Asichi. She says it was just supposed to be a show. The bear was tame. Tala really believed in rights for prisoners. Tala interviewed lots of people with Vree and wanted to give Kira a chance too. It happened at the end of it. She screamed and it came out from her. There's a bar we can find a lot of magicians at called Hidden Rabbit. They made an announcement through the manager that they were looking for someone. They had a sword-swallower who was very eager to play with swords. Adam does the Remote Viewing ritual with Ash. He sees a bear balancing on the unicycle with a little ball. The crowd seems appreciative despite their rough exteriors. Kira takes out a piece of paper from her pocket, reads it over silently, puts it away, and then says the spell. There's a searing sense of power. Kira and the bear both seem to be in pain. But the wave comes back and instead of it dissipating, it's like a kawoosh. It protrudes and then goes back. The bodies of Kira and the bear are clearly dead. A second set of eyes open on Kira's forehead and she starts to move and look at the crowd. The eyes alight on the bear. The eyes disappear from her head and reappear on the bear. It gets sharper teeth, horns. It's a monster. There's a roar of triumph and aggression and it looks at the crowd and pounces. If we can destroy the body of the bear, we can banish the demon. But we can't let it have the opportunity to move to something else. Without burning things, says Andrew. %% # Excalidraw Data ## Text Elements ## Drawing ```json {"type":"excalidraw","version":2,"source":"https://github.com/zsviczian/obsidian-excalidraw-plugin/releases/tag/2.0.25","elements":[],"appState":{"theme":"dark","gridSize":null,"viewBackgroundColor":"#ffffff"}} ``` %%
