- Captain: 3
- Charismatic leader of a crew, rather than a ship. They need to be good at making snap decisions based on information presented to them as well as personal knowledge of the motivations of each crewmember.
- Cannot be trained without first training two other positions.
- First mate: 1.5
- second in line to captain, does whatever the captain requires and serves as a go-between for many of the crew and the captain
- Quartermaster: 2
- Stop infighting among the crew
- Distribute spoils
- Captains a secondary ship if one is captured
- Navigator: 1.5
- Plot the course of a ship given a destination by the captain, taking into account weather patterns and knowledge of nearby dangers (reefs, etc)
- Boatswain or bosun: 1
- Makes sure the ship is functional, checks rigging
- Collects supplies for the crew/ship, keeps track of food stock
- Makes sure sails are taken care of
- Carpenter: 1
- Assesses and maintains ship's structural integrity
- Makes repairs as needed
- Doubles as ship surgeon
- Master Gunner: 1.5
- Handle cannons, ballistas, explosives, and other firepower
- Manages powder monkeys
