The booth is decorated with an animated depiction of the night sky, with shooting stars arcing across it. An elderly goblin perches behind the ticket counter, peering at you quizzically through a spyglass. He lowers the spyglass and calls out to you: “Greetings, fair fairgoers!” ``` Adult's ticket: 8 sp Child's ticket: 3 sp Alternate method of payment: make a fey pact with [[Nikolas Midnight]]: `dice: [[The Witchlight Carnival#^bargains]]` ## Big Top ```ad-info The roof of this tent reaches toward the night sky in three swooping peaks topped with spinning gold stars. Painted wooden panels on the tent walls whirl with colorful motion, displaying vibrant circus performances. The sound of music and laughter drifts out through the canvas door. ``` Free entrance (no punch). ### End of Hour 4: Big Top Extravaganza ```ad-info The lights dim and a hush falls over the crowd. A second later, a spotlight illuminates a lithe, elven figure sitting in a silver hoop, suspended above the center ring by silk ropes. The elf wears a dazzling suit of diamond-pane mirrors and a pair of butterfly wings. His scepter is topped with a spinning vane. “Welcome, one and all, to this evening’s extravaganza! I am Mister Light. Prepare to be delighted!” ``` `dice: [[The Witchlight Carnival#^bigtopacts]]` ![[bigtop-tiefling.png]] Near the end of the show, Mr Light asks if any guests would like to perform their own acts for the crowd. Any character that accepts must make a DC 14 Performance check, raising carnival mood by 1 on a success. If characters perform together, it is a group check, and they raise the carnival's mood by 3. They also get invited to talk to Mr Witch and Mr Light backstage. ### End of Hour 8: Crowning of the Witchlight Monarch ## The Feasting Orchard [[Ellywick Tumblestrum]] and her large albino frog entertains people and talks about fate and happenstance. ## Dressing Room ```ad-info This dressing room is a scene of colorful clutter: tables strewn with makeup kits and glass jewelry, mirrors trimmed with glowing orbs of light, and chests of drawers and wardrobes spilling over with garments. ``` The Dressing Room adjoins [[The Witchlight Carnival#Big Top]]. Two [Witchlight hands](https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/witchlight-hand) guard a curtain between the dressing room and the Big Top, but they're arguing about the order of the acts and drinking pear cider, so characters may be able to sneak past (DC 12 Stealth). `dice: [[The Witchlight Carnival#^costumes]]` ## Bubble-Pot Teapot ```ad-info A twenty-foot-tall teapot rests on a wooden platform, its painted surface whirling with moving imagery of flying dragons breathing streams of bubbles. A door at the base of the teapot allows entry to its interior; those who enter emerge from the spout enclosed in a bubble that detaches to float off across the carnival. Seven goblins sits around the platform, sipping tea from mismatched porcelain cups. ``` Cost: 1 ticket punch NPC: [[Treaclewise]] If a character engages him in rhyming slang, Treaclewise will give them Scatterleaf Tea: ```ad-tip title: Scatterleaf tea **_Scatterleaf Tea._** As an action, a creature can scatter these tea leaves on the ground in a 5-foot-radius circle, duplicating the effect of a [protection from evil and good](https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/protection-from-evil-and-good) spell that lasts for 10 minutes. To gain the spell’s protection, a creature must stand in the circle of tea leaves. In addition, a cup of hot, delicious tea magically appears in the protected creature’s hands. A pouch contains enough leaves for one use. ``` Anyone who goes on this ride is enveloped by a large, magical bubble that floats gently over the entire carnival. Depending on their Perception check, they may spot one of the wandering outsiders: `dice: [[The Witchlight Carnival#^outsiders]]` DC 14 Acrobatics check lets the bubble rider gain control of where the bubble goes. It pops in one minute, and the character is safely deposited on the ground. ## Calliope ```ad-info A merry tune spills forth from an instrument on the back of a brightly painted wagon. A monkey wearing a cloak covered with buttons turns a handle at the wagon’s rear, sending music into the air from rows of golden whistles. As you watch, a goblin dressed as a ladybug toddles up to you, rattling a tin cup. ``` A calliope is a set of metal whistles used to mechanically produce music using steam or compressed air. This calliope changes its tune depending on the current mood of the Carnival. [[Ernest the monkey]] is operating the calliope by turning the crank. Marigold (chaotic good), the goblin dressed as a ladybug, collects the proffered buttons in a tin cup and delivers them to Ernest. Marigold is sprightly and often cajoles bystanders into dancing. ==On the Story Tracker, jot down the names of characters who give at least one button to Ernest.== If one or more of these characters find themselves trapped or captured in Prismeer, they hear the distant whistling of the calliope and can follow the music to safety. Any barriers or obstacles in their way are magically removed. For example, the lock on a cell door might spring open on its own, a guard might fall asleep, or a silent, spectral monkey resembling Ernest might appear and reveal the shortest route to freedom. This is a tool to help the characters out of a tight spot and can be used only once per group. ## Dragonfly Rides [[Northwind]] is a carefree treant sapling who always has a squirrel companion, [[Red]]. ## Mystery Mine ```ad-info Propelled by magic, mine carts laden with fairgoers trundle into an opening carved like a dragon’s mouth. The carts reappear moments later on the far side of the attraction, with the passengers expressing a mixture of bewilderment, fear, and excitement. Near the entrance, a male dwarf dressed like a wizard shouts, “Unlock the mysteries of your mind in the Mystery Mine!” He has bushy eyebrows, wears a pointy hat, and holds a large clockwork contraption shaped like a giant eye. ``` Costs 1 ticket punch. [[Zephixo]] is holding up the contraption, calling it "The All-Seeing Eye". Those who look into it will come face to face with their fears on the ride. Each mine cart holds 8 Medium creatures. The party goes through a dragon's mouth and is confronted with each person's fears: - Ora: Her father finding her sister and torturing her. - Lira: Evil Lira, with wings, snatching up people and tearing at their flesh. - Jamedi: A black-haired, olive-skinned woman walking into a quarry with a lunch basket - seconds before it explodes. ==DC12 Wisdom saving throw for each illusion, at disadvantage if it is the character's fear that they are facing.== Success on all: advantage on Charisma-based ability checks at the carnival until the crowning of the Witchlight Monarch. Failure on all: nightmares for `dice: 1d8` days. ## Pixie Kingdom ```ad-info A copse of oak trees shelters a miniaturized fairground. At its heart, a hamster runs inside a tiny Ferris wheel, encircled by minuscule wagons and candy stalls. A pixie sits cross-legged in the hollow of a tree at the entrance to this realm. ``` [[Jeremy Plum]], a glum fairy who is dressed in shocking and extravagant makeup, gives them pixie names in a monotone. He gives them pixie dust and gives them a potion that reduces their size to Tiny for 1 hour or until they want the effect to end. ```ad-info The Pixie Kingdom is a tranquil oasis compared to the rest of the bustling carnival. The air is filled with the aroma of blackberry wine and flower blossoms. Eight brightly painted doorways are nestled in the bark at the bases of the surrounding trees. ``` Twelve pixies are flitting between the houses, and will eventually all crowd around the one that the players choose to go to. They're eager to talk. They'll ask the party to play hide and seek. Stealth check. Highest one wins, and gets pixie dust. ## Silversong Lake ```ad-info Mist gathers at the banks of a shimmering lake. Near its center, a mermaid lounges in a giant bowl, singing a glorious, haunting song that captivates spectators on the lakeshore. In response, the lake water coalesces into magical sculptures that whirl around her as she performs. ``` [[Palasha]] is there, singing a song. She puts on an act of being elegant and composed, but she's really worried because she hasn't seen Candlefoot since he proposed to her and lost his voice. While she is performing, [[Topplepot]] will pose as hecklers in the crowd: - Mermaid? More like mer-_laid_! - I'd sure like to get between _those _ fins! - Hey fish girl, was that mime's _sashimi_ not to your liking? Or was it the sight of your _sushi_ that made him lose his voice in fright? After three jeers, Palasha falters in mid-song, leaps out of her bowl, and swims downriver. (She goes to the Hall of Illusions.) ## Hall of Illusions There is a glass cabinet near the entrance of a tent. ### Glass cabinet ```ad-info A wooden mannequin of a grinning, raven-haired young woman in witch’s attire and a green flowing cape hovers inside a glass cabinet. At the top of the cabinet, a sign reads “Tasha the Wizard—Known for Her Hideous Laughter.” A halfling couple holds hands as they approach the glass cabinet. One of the halflings is wearing butterfly face paint. As he drops to one knee and pulls a small box from his pocket, his sweetheart bursts into laughter and begins rolling on the ground. The halfling in face paint begins sobbing and darts into the nearby tent without getting his ticket punched. ``` Any creature that comes within 10 feet of the mannequin must succeed on a DC13 Wisdom saving throw or be affected by [Tasha's hideous laughter](https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/tashas-hideous-laughter). The halfing that proposed was [[Rubin Sugarwood]] and his halfling beau is [[Ween Sundapple]]. Ween got too close to the mannequinn and started laughing hilariously. He will remain outside the tent and call for Rubin. ### Approaching the Hall of Illusions tent ```ad-info This large tent is painted with a mural of shifting images that show grinning faeries diving into pools of color. The helical stripes of the tent’s pointed canopies rotate in spirals, and the whole display seems designed to befuddle onlookers. A clown dressed in muted garb stands at the tent’s entrance, blinking at you. ``` Costs 1 ticket punch. There are tall mirrors that line the interior of the tent. - Entrance: onlookers in their youth - Middle: older - Furthest part: twilight years This is where the portal between the Material Plane and [[Prismeer]] lies. Most of the carnival staff avoid it, believing it to be haunted. An incantation must be spoken out loud in front of any mirror, and it becomes a portal: _Hither, thither, here and there; wander yonder, show me where._ [[Candlefoot]] is a strangely monochromatic male human who is in the Hall of Illusions. Upon seeing the characters, he mimes that he was proposing to [[Palasha]] when he lost his voice. He flaps his arms to say that he knows that [[Topplepot]] was the culprit. ```ad-question title: If characters look for Rubin collapse: true DC 15 Perception check to find Rubin. He's looking into a mirror, and [[Sowpig the Ghoul]]'s reflection is in the mirror, whispering to Rubin's youthful reflection. She's trying to tempt him to go to Prismeer so that [[Skabatha Nightshade]] can strike a bargain with him. ``` ```ad-question title: If characters don't look for Rubin collapse: true They see Rubin step into the mirror to join [[Sowpig the Ghoul]]. His youthful reflection in the mirror takes the girl's hand and walks away with her, and the ring he proposed with drops to the floor outside the mirror. Carnival mood lowers by 1. ``` ```ad-question title: If the characters try to persuade Rubin to go to Ween collapse: true DC 10 Persuasion check, and the carnival's mood rises by 1. ``` ## Carousel ```ad-info A procession of wooden unicorns stands motionless on a circular wooden platform. Fairgoers clamber onto the unicorns’ backs, and a female centaur sets the ride in motion. The unicorns shake their manes and creak to life, cantering around the carousel to the delight of their riders. ``` Ride on the carousel costs 1 ticket punch. [[Diana Cloppington]] is the female human-not-a-centaur who works here. She suggests that the characters "speak to the unicorns", but that they must first earn their trust by learning their names. She gives the party a clay pot of gold paint and some paintbrushes, and then closes the ride for "essential repairs". There are eight unicorns, riding in pairs, and four of them don't have names. - Fortune favors the ==Bold==. - ==Pride== goes before the Fall. - A Stitch in time saves ==Nine==. - A rolling Stone gathers no ==Moss==. When the players paint the names correctly, the carousel begins and the unicorns whinny for the characters to ride them. They share three things from the Secrets and Clues with the players. ## Gondola Swans ```ad-info Enormous swans glide through the water here, pulling ornate wooden gondolas draped in flowers. The swans disappear into banks of silver mist as they wend their way down the river. A jetty extends ahead, at the end of which a waiting swan preens its feathers. ``` Costs 1 ticket punch and is an hour long. It goes around the entire carnival. Each gondola is pulled by a giant swan. The one the characters ride is [[Feathereen]]. She can take up to eight Medium creatures. Feathereen is erudite and haughty, and asks the characters philosophical questions: - What is joy? - How do you know that you exist? Feathereen tries to pitch passengers into the water if they ignore her or make light of her questions. DC 10 Dexterity saving throw to stay in the boat. Mood lowers by 1. If the characters humor her, she will reveal some secrets and mood rises by 1. ==These characers gain debating talents that may prove useful later.== ## Lost Property ```ad-info Outside the lost property wagon is a large feline creature with midnight-blue fur. It has a pair of tentacles extending from its shoulders and wears fake butterfly wings. Hanging from its collar is a small wooden keg. The creature roughhouses with two young boys. One boy squeals, “Again, Dirla, again!” while the other hangs onto the creature’s neck. ``` [[Dirlagraun]] is minding two boys [[Viro]] and [[Allowin]] while their mother gets some food for them. Dirlagraun has a keg fastened to its collar filled with toffee apple juice. The keg has a spigot. Viro grabs a mirrored ball from the lost property wagon. In a rare show of anger, Dirlagraun quickly flicks a tentacle and snarls. The mirrored ball is the only thing Dirlagraun has left of his cub, [[Star]]. ## Staff Area ```ad-info A tangled wall of thorns surrounds a cluster of wagons lit by lanterns. This caravan is barely visible through the thicket. ``` Located behind the [[The Witchlight Carnival#Big Top|Big Top]], protected by a 20-foot-high, 5-foot-thick wall of thorns that parts for carnival staff for 10 seconds. ```ad-question title: If a creature moves through the wall of thorns by force collapse: true - It costs 8 feet of movement to move through 1 foot of the wall. - The first time a creature enters the wall or ends its turn there, it must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw and take `dice: 1d8` piercing damage on a fail or half as much on a success. - At the end of a turn where there is a creature in the thorn wall, trumpet-shaped flowers bloom and sound an alarm. ``` Enclosed by the wall of thorns are seven brightly painted wagons in a circle and one glass tank filled with water (for [[Palasha]]). The fancies of the wagons belongs to [[Mr Witch]] and [[Mr Light]]. [[Burly]] the bugbear patrols the outer perimeter. He wears a pumpkin on his head like a helmet. [[Thaco]] the clown patrols the inner area. He sits right outside the door to Mr Witch and Mr Light's wagon, blowing bubbles with his bubble pipe. If the characters are caught, they are ejected from the carnival and must fight, sneak, or barter their way back in. ```ad-question title: On DC 14 Perception check to listen to Mr Light and Mr Witch's wagon collapse: true Two contrasting voices emanate from the wagon. _Mister Witch, in a low and gravelly voice:_ “You need to find a way to calm down.” _Mister Light, in a high-pitched, shrill voice:_ “I’ll calm down when that kenku pest is gone.” _Witch:_ “She knows nothing. She’ll get frustrated soon enough and be on her way.” _Light:_ “I hope you’re right.” _Witch:_ “Trust me.” ``` ### Inside the wagon Mr Witch's bunk is neat and perfunctory. Mr Light's is filled with gaudy baubles and is more messy. Loot (DC 15 Investigation check) - Hatbox containing the crown of the Witchlight Monarch, made of golden butterflies - Secret compartment in a bench is a tiny, bejeweled chest worth 50 gp that can summon [a larger chest](https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/leomunds-secret-chest) - chest hidden on Ethereal Plane is worth 5,000 gp - 91 gp - Potion of Diminution - Potion of Growth - Potion of Advantage ## Small Stalls Stalls that sell sweet snacks and drinks, manned by Witchlight hands. 1 ticket punch = 1 snack or beverage, served on a large flower petal or fist-sized snail shell, including: - Blue-frosted cupcake - Candied apple on a stick - Euphoreo cookie (saucer-sized cookies dusted with particles of faerie dragon euphoria gas) - Eveningberry wine (a sweet, nonalcoholic drink) - Faerie bell nectar (harvested from faerie bell flowers) - Pixie tarts (powdered candy in little cups) - Sugar-glazed button mushrooms - Tree sap lollipop There are also games and contests that cost 1 ticket punch each: ### Almiraj Ring Toss _(Dexterity)_ ```ad-info “This almiraj is no mirage. Adorn its horn with two or three rings to win a prize!” ``` ![[almiraj ring toss.png]] This game involves tossing rings over the horn of a wooden statuette of an almiraj (a cute, bunny-like creature with a horn like a unicorn’s). The almiraj teleports around on a tabletop, making it hard to score a success. A participant gets three rings. Tossing a ring over the almiraj’s horn requires a successful DC 17 Dexterity check. Two successful tosses earn one roll on the [Carnival Prizes](https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/twbtw/witchlight-carnival#CarnivalPrizes "Carnival Prizes") table; three successes earn two rolls on the table. ### Catch the Dragon by the Tail _(Wisdom)__ ```ad-info “Prizes! Doing so requires three successful DC 15 Charisma ([Performance](https://www.dndbeyond.com/compendium/rules/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#Performance)) checks in five or fewer attempts. Someone who wins the contest rolls once on the [Carnival Prizes](https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/twbtw/witchlight-carnival#CarnivalPrizes "Carnival Prizes") table, or twice if they succeeded three times without failing a check. ### Goblin Wrestling _(Strength)_ ```ad-info “Strong folks! Test your mettle in a goblin wrestle!” ``` A Small participant has to pin an unarmed [goblin](https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/goblin) (lawful good), while a Medium participant has to pin one goblin while wrestling two of them. Winning the game requires a successful Strength ([Athletics](https://www.dndbeyond.com/compendium/rules/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#Athletics)) check contested by the goblin; two goblins working together make one check with advantage. Resolve a tie by rerolling. A victorious participant earns one roll on the [Carnival Prizes](https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/twbtw/witchlight-carnival#CarnivalPrizes "Carnival Prizes") table. ### Guess the Number of Feathers _(Intelligence)_ ```ad-info “Birds of a feather? Someone who succeeds on a DC 18 Intelligence check guesses correctly and earns one roll on the [Carnival Prizes](https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/twbtw/witchlight-carnival#CarnivalPrizes "Carnival Prizes") table, or two rolls if the successful check occurs on the first attempt. ### Outstare the Cyclops _(Constitution)_ ```ad-info “What do you do when the eye of the cyclops falls upon you? You stare right back if you’ve got the stamina!” ``` Winning this game requires a participant to outstare an illusory cyclops. Whoever blinks first loses. To win the game, the contestant must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution check. Someone who wins the game receives a prize, determined by rolling once on the [Carnival Prizes](https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/twbtw/witchlight-carnival#CarnivalPrizes "Carnival Prizes") table. ![[cyclops_staring_contest.png]] ## Snail Racing ```ad-info The grandstands next to this racecourse are filled with cheering fairgoers ringing bells, swinging rattles, and waving flags.
