## Session Summary
> [!tldr] [[007_20220604 Otari is a plucky town of thieves]]
> We went back aboveground to the town of Otari and explored a bit more of our surroundings. We went to stay at the Crook's Nook, where we met what seemed to be the leader of the local crime gang, Yin. She gave us some rooms to stay in and also gave Bolt a job. She wanted him to steal something from a particular man who had just arrived at Otari.
>
> The next day, we went to a shop called Wrin's Wonders, where the proprietress, Wrin, offered me an apprenticeship. We went to the Crow's Cask, where the tengu that was there, Magiloi, admitted to accidentally poisoning or intoxicating Bolt's mark the night before, but he didn't know where the man had ended up. We tracked the man down to the Rowdy Rockfish, a more upmarket establishment, where Bolt and I convinced the proprietress, Brelda, to let us into the room that the man, who turned out to be Lord Oskan, was in.
>
> We went back to Crook's Nook, but on the way, we got waylaid by a boy who attempted to steal the watch from Bolt. We marched him back to Yin's with us after he told us that he was part of her test. We watched as Yin fired the boy, Vin, and her men threw him down the trapdoor and into the river. Impressed with Bolt, Yin offered to give us jobs.
>
> We went to the mayor's house, where Skram attempted to ingratiate himself by telling him about Yin's criminal activities. To our surprise, however, the mayor seemed amused more than alarmed, and he said that it's an unspoken rule in Otari that visitors are taken advantage of somewhat. As long as we didn't wrong the inhabitants of Otari, he was happy to look the other way and let Yin continue with her affairs. We decided to head down to the Otari Fishery and finish the job for Tamily that we had started. ^summary

## Log
We backtracked to Otari, deciding to call it a day. [[Tamily Tanderveil|Tamily]] holds a game for some local patrons of hers.
![[golarion-tamily.png]]
Tamily is human, proprietor of the [[Otari Fishery]]. It's a hall that provides meals and occasionally transport.
She's always smiling, older than most of us in the party.
![[golarion-otari.png]]
Main feature of Otari is a giant wheel that uses water to motorize saws and cut logs. There are people on platforms that cut logs. The logs go down a large slide and then Otari exports the logs.
[[Karsh]] is like a viking-- blond hair with small orc tusks jutting out from his bottom lip.
We are on an island called [[Starstone Isle]]. This is where a man named [[Aroden]] raised the legendary [[Starstone]]. Also on this island, about two days away, is the largest city in the world, [[Absalom]]. Absalom has people from all around the world.
Where can we stay the night?
- We can go to the [[Crook's Nook]] - cheapest.
- [[Crow's Cask]]
- [[The Thirsty Alpaca]] just collapsed a few weeks ago. They say it's haunted.
The Crook's Nook is a sailor's tavern built across the Osprey River. It's the cheapest place to stay. It's actually a bridge over the Osprey River that cuts across Otari. There are several trap doors on the floor, but they must lead into the river. They'll use the trap doors later "when they have fun". It's about 20 feet to the river. The clientele are rough and some are drunk, but they seem harmless for now.
Proprietress starts looking at us as we enter. I go up to her and tell her we're trying to find out who's taking the fish from Tamily, and I ask her if we can stay here. She seems surprised, not that things were stolen, but that it escaped her notice. She is [[Yin Yasmera]].
Sleeping in the common room is 3 cp. Room for 1 is 1 sp. Biggest room houses two: 8 sp.
Mug of ale is 1 cp. Pot of coffee or tea is 2 cp.
I pay for the 8 sp room for everyone.
[[Mayor Oseph Menhemes]] is like royalty here. He's human. He owns [[The Giant's Wheel]] and he owns the lumber company running that wheel, and two other lumber companies are renting the wheel from him. He is the richest person in town. A half-orc named [[Klort Hingus]] tells us we can talk to the mayor himself for business. ^b1c025
Yin tells Bolt about [[Lord Oskan|a person]] with a top hat and a monocle who has just arrived at the harbor today. She wants Bolt to steal something interesting from him discreetly, and make sure [[Captain Lardus Longsaddle]] doesn't hear about it. Bolt has until sundown tomorrow, though. The item is connected to him via a chain.
New abilities!
- Skram: alchemical dedication
- Bolt: bard dedication (can cast Message and Mage Hand now)
- [[Karsh]]: Someone approaches him in public, wearing the [[Pharasma]], goddess of graves, and asks him if he has a god to worship. Karsh says his father was an orc and his mother was an oofen? (Some sort of viking). His mother left him in [[Lastwall]]. Lastwall is no more. Lastwall is now called Gravelands: city of undead. Karsh left with a lot of other refugees, and went on a ship. He served as a ship's medic. He tries to recruit Karsh for battle. Karsh says he doesn't want to fight, but he wants to heal. The one that unleashed the undead upon Lastwall is called [[The Whispering Tyrant]]. The Whispering Tyrant destroyed Lastwall and just attacked [[Absalom]] only about a month ago. Fortunately, heroes rose and defeated the tyrant. The tyrant fled back to the Isle of Dread. But he will come again. They are preparing to fight when he returns. ^2de9a5
- Knight of Lastwall dedication: good against undead
- Bastion dedication: more shield skills
- Karsh has turned his back on gods: Godless Healing
Shop for magical items: [[Wrin's Wonders]]. [[Wrin Sivinxi]] is a strange one, but she is harmless. She is eccentric and settled in town a decade ago. She's the strangest person in this town (other than us). She's nice... if you get to know her... if you understand her.
There are standing stones arranged in a 50-foot diameter circle. There are wooden beams on the ceiling on which flaps rest, but the ceiling is open to the sky. The stones appear to be granite. There are a collection of other dome-shaped tents used to store wares. Wrin herself is all white, elvish, white eyes, horns like a ram swirling over and under the ears. She can read fortunes! She talks to us without turning around, but seems to know we're there and what we're doing without looking at us.
The stars tell her something's about to happen in Otari. Sometime next week she will ask Skram for a favor, in exchange for an alchemist's kit. She mostly sells curios, but she does have some things for adventurers. ^579db2
![[golarion-wrin.png]]
We go to [[Blades for Glades]]
- Otari's primary smithy.
- We see a lot of broken or unfinished saws, axes, etc. (especially tools for processing lumber)
- Proprietor: male human, currently snarling while making a saw. Carman Rajani.
- He said something under his breath about aiming it at the mayor.
Crow's Cask and Rowdy Rockfish are other taverns here.
[[Crow's Cask]]
- Sign depicts drunken crows perched on a leaky cask.
- We hear bubbling sounds from the back. There is a tengu, a bird guy, with his back to us. He's got burners and flasks and tubes with liquid in them. It smells like alcohol here. He has famous spiced pumpkin rum. Some things explode.
The tengu gives Bolt a drink and insists he drink everything, and of course Bolt does! [[Magiloi]] is his name. He is a "wine connoiseur". People come to taste his strange and exciting flavors, and most of them survive. There is a shrine to the god [[Cayden Cailean]], the accidental god. God of ale, bravery, freedom, fun. If you pass the starstone's trials, you become gods. There was one guy who was drunk and yet somehow passed the trials, so he became a god! Now the starstone is protected-- there is a building around it to prevent accidental adventurers or bad people from touching it and becoming gods.
He knows [[Lord Oskan|the person with a top hat]]. He smelled one of Magiloi's concoctions and fell over, asleep.
Some of the vials are not alcoholic in nature. They look like potions, perhaps. There is also an expensive-looking scroll case. Something heavy is moving inside. Magiloi opens it and takes out a rune. It's a returning rune. 55 gp.
Healing potions are 4 gp each.
[[The Rowdy Rockfish]]. Sign with a rockfish with his fins up in a boxing pose. Two-storey structure. The patrons are quiet and calm. A matronly dwarf with a small smile and a braided beard is sitting there. She leads us to the first-storey room. He owes her 1 sp. She takes us to his room. He's thrown up everywhere. There is a small trinket attached to a chain... it is a pocket watch. There is a lock that Bolt picks.
Bolt finds 11 cp on him. I find a hidden pouch containing 10 gp sewn into his clothes.
I gave the proprietress 1 gp for him. She offers us a job as well-- this is her son's tavern. Her name is Brelda Brenkaven. Her son, Lazda, managed this tavern and she was retired. Last year, though, people said Lazda walked out of town with a hooded stranger and nobody has seen him since. Lazda was red-headed. He's a dwarf.
I gave Brelda another gp to not tell the man that we were there.
On the way to meet up with Skram, someone tries to steal the watch from Bolt! ^ac159e
- 26 Karsh
- 25 Bolt
- 24 thief
- 21 me
- Round 1
- Karsh grapples him critically
The thief's name is [[Vin]]. We go to the Crook's Nook with him. He tries to run away, but I _tanglefoot_ him and we easily catch up.
Yin is not happy that Vin failed... she gestures for people to take Vin. Yin's men open one of the trap doors and throw Vin in. She tells him that he's fired and that she doesn't want to see his face again. Vin is alive-- it's not too far to fall.
Since Yin says that she never actually wanted the watch, and that the test was just for us to get the watch and then also not lose it to Vin, Bolt goes back to give the watch back to the man we stole it from. He's awake! His name is [[Lord Oskan]]. He's very huffy and says he's from Absalom. We give him back the watch and he hurries off to get to his ship.
Brelda will let me work here and train more efficiently here at the [[The Rowdy Rockfish]]. We'd have a discount on what they're selling and we can stay there too.
Things we haven't seen
- [[The Giant's Wheel]]
- [[Gallentine Deliveries]]
- [[Odd Stories]]
- [[Otari Garrisson]]
- [[Menhemes Manor]] (mayor)
- [[Farmer's Guild]]
- [[Otari Market]]
- two other manors
- [[Dawnflower Library]]. They openly worship Sarenraei and other good deities, but it is also a source of information. It's just beneath the cliffs.
- [[Otari Graveyard]]: on top of the cliff.
- [[Stone Ring Pond]]: circle of standing stones around a pond. Nobody goes there. People talk in hushed whispers about going there, but they don't really know what else is there.
Skram goes to [[Menhemes Manor]]. Part of it is a publicly available museum of Otari's history. The other part is the home of the mayor and his family. We go in and find him talking to a little child, kissing her and sending her off with a woman. He watches them go. Also with him are servants. ^4657ea
Skram and Bolt tell the mayor about Yin, but he already knows. He thinks Yin and her group are a minor inconvenience to visitors-- they don't really target locals. Skram even tries to lie to the mayor to say that there was an attempt on Lord Oskan's life, but he doesn't do it convincingly. For some reason, Skram really seems to want to get jobs with the mayor. The mayor asks him to tutor his children as they become teenagers.
He seems to think that the visitors are fair game for theft-- as long as we don't tell the [[Captain Lardus Longsaddle|Captain]]. The Mayor says he's dour.
