# [[060_20240127 Bulette Rodeo]]
## Session Summary
> [!tldr] [[060_20240127 Bulette Rodeo]]
> The party faces a **Bulette** (Rocky Maw) that devoured their campfire and tent. After defeating it, they discover it had specifically hunted rare prey—its stomach contains catfolk and halfling bones, werewolf remains, and valuable treasure including gems, a massive **Walking Cauldron** that can follow the party and assist with potion crafting.
>
> Weather complications force them to retreat from a forest fire back to swampy terrain. [[Ash]]'s scouting reveals the remains of a horse 40 feet up in a tree—evidence of a large flying predator. They recover a traveler's belongings including a **Greater Anylength Rope** (silk with golden threads, 3,000 lb capacity) and most importantly, a mysterious comic book signed by **[[Dendarion]]**.
>
> [[Vayle]] discovers the book is actually a manual for **"The Way of the Spellshot"**—a class archetype combining arcane magic with gunpowder. The story follows a boy who learns to conjure guns after his fire-powered mother dies protecting him. Tension develops between [[Vayle]] and [[Malleus]], with Malleus probing about Vayle's sleeping habits, leading to a confrontation where Vayle threatens him with magic to keep their secrets safe. ^summary

## Log
Full moon is in 5 days. We're 7 days from [[Absalom]].
Combat with a Rocky Maw! It ate our campfire and our tent!
![[uu-rocky-maw.png]]
![[1706346611390 - Combat]]
The party successfully defeated the Bulette (Rocky Maw) in a challenging 4-round combat. The creature initially attacked with its jaw and tried to burrow underground, but the party's coordinated attacks and strategic positioning led to its defeat. Grumblebum delivered the final blow with a critical hit, while Zuhri's attacks and the party's teamwork proved effective against the armored beast.
This was a Bulette.
62,5gp
6 Bulk each
Traits: *Heavy armor; Sensory: Tremorsense, Bloodsense; Shield; Slashing; Piercing*
We see it's swallowed some things inside too:
- our tents
- bones, claws, fangs
- Catfolk and halfling bones, which are rare, so we can surmise that it specifically went out of its way to hunt and eat them.
- humanoids (werewolves?)
- mostly digested tents, leather armor
- three gems - black onyx 75sp, red coral 15gp, amber gem 10g
- 4 Bulk's worth of a huge witch's cauldron that it couldn't digest because it's made of metal
- Bond identifies this as a Walking Cauldron. Has a land speed of 25 feet. Can be used as a suitable tool for crafting potions or other liquids. It can follow you and tries to remain within 30 feet. Cannot be used in combat. Can carry 2 Bulk of potion ingredients inside itself.
Long rest!
On this day, it's very cloudy. Ranged attacks will be more difficult here.
Navigation fails. We don't make progress towards Absalom.
Weather check: Ash smells something in the air: smoke. We're in a lush forest. He says that several hundred feet from us, there's a fire. Not a campfire - it's too strong. It's a forest fire!
We decide to go back to the previous place, a swamp.
Morning activities
- [[Jaspen Bond Callistair|Bond]]: *Befriend animal.*
- Malleus: *Befriend animal.* He has also befriended a swamp bird. Inside his armor is a vine growing through his skeleton that has some flowers. The bird is going in and out of the flowers.
- ![[uu-malleus.png]]
- [[Zuhri]] forages and gets something.
- [[Grumblebum|Grumble]] forages and gets something.
- [[Ashnefrotty|Ash]] scouts and finds something. One of the trees has the remains of half a horse. There's a torn saddlebag. No sign of the other half of the horse.
- Bond says this was a large flying creature that can carry a horse. It bit it in mid-flight. It had talons.
- The horse is 40 feet high on a tree.
- In saddelbags
- 100 ft rope
- rotten rations.
- dead human - looks like some sort of traveller
- backpack of the traveller: broken tent, rotten rations, 2 vials of liquid (healing potion), magical rope, leatherbound book
- This is not someone from [[Gallentine Deliveries]]. They have an insignia on them and this guy does not.
- The magical rope is a Greater Anylength Rope: silk, inlaid with golden threads. Can hold 3,000 pounds, Hardess of 5, 24 HP. You can command the rope to split into two different pieces. 100 feet normally. - [[Zuhri]] gets this.
- The book has a lot of drawings of people talking and doing fantastic things, like a comic book. But there are no words. It's like 100 pages long.
- dagger
- longsword
- studded leather armor
-
[[Grumblebum]]'s axe is named *Gutsplasher*.
Evening activities
- [[Ashnefrotty|Ash]]: Organize watch. ✅ 22. +1 bonus to Perception during shift.
- [[Zuhri]]: Entertain. ❌ Critical fail!
- Vayle: Cook. ❌ Critical fail. Also prays to [[Melani]]. +1 for the next day for Navigation, etc.
Vayle read the book. It's about a boy who was able to find a way to use black powder. His mom has fire powers, and she agrees to enjoy the boy in a minor adventure. They got into a fight and the mom dies trying to save the boy from a fatal swing.
The boy learns a new power. He conjures a gun. He spends the next few years clearing the forest and taking out the bad guys, a few people at a time.
The now teenager fights the main villain. The bullet phases through a wall, crits the villain, and kills him in one shot.
It's signed: [[Dendarion]].
Vayle realises it's a manual. It can teach someone *The Way of the Spellshot.* It's a class archetype.
Vayle and Malleus don't get along *at all.*
> [!NOTE]- From Vayle's eyes
> “Why don’t you sleep as much as your other flesh friends?”
My whole body immediately tensed.
“I.. It’s in my genes. Who are you to be asking something that personal to someone you just met, anyway?”
Donning full plate armour and seated beside me, I couldn’t catch a glimpse of Malleus the Skeleton’s facial expression, however his body language suggested he might as well be smirking. He continued to press me.
“Liar. It’s such a mundane question, why would you need to get so defensive?”
I set down the 200-page long grimoire I was tasked to study, which turned out to be on combining arcane magic with gunpowder. While I knew that Malleus lacked any semblance of tactfulness, I didn’t expect him to be such an annoyance. Touché though, he saw right through my little white lie.
“Listen. I don’t like being singled out nor ridiculed.” I glanced at the rest of my party, who were sprawled out on their bedrolls, the crackling frames of the campfire casting a warm glow on their weary faces. “If you ever rat me out for my sleeping disorder, or anything for that matter in front of them, then you and I would have a problem.”
To add gravitas to my threat, A vibrant orb of purple energy coalesced on my left palm, erratically flickering, causing the surrounding air to crackle.
“Okay, okay. I was just curious. This flesh creature gets so defensive.” Malleus stood and strode to the other side of camp, out of my view. A subtle smile graced my lips as I flipped open the grimoire.
My secret is safe for now.
