# [[Vayle]]
![[golarion-vayle.png]]
![[golarion-vayle-token.png]]
Vayle is an undead sorcerer with orange-red hair and an aristocratic hat. Brought back from death by [[Melani]], they live in [[Otari]] and quietly hide their nature from most of the town. They describe themself as *cowardly and martyrly* — and as someone who suddenly has a taste for humanoid bones.
## Identity & Personality
Vayle straddles secrets: their undead nature, their infiltration of [[The Voidseekers]], and the mark left on them by breaking a Red Mantis contract. They lean on words and illusions to keep people safe, but the people closest to them — Bond, Zuhri, Ash, Grumble — know the truth.
- **Cowardly and martyrly**: self-described, but always defining their limits
- **Undetectable nature**: even [[Wrin Sivinxi|Wrin]] could not sense their *Doomed* condition
- **Magic without a god**: publicly claims their magic involves no god; privately complicated by their bond with [[Melani]] and now [[The Apometi]]
- **Lonely kinship**: a strong bond with [[Zuhri]] because they're both alone and different
- **Resents structure for its own sake**: clashes occasionally with [[Jaspen Bond Callistair|Bond]] over rules, but admires his moral consistency
- **Counsellor**: runs daily therapy sessions for [[Lazda Venkervale|Lazda]]
- **Deepest fear**: being outed as undead to the whole town and left living a pitiful life alone (revealed by [[Belcorra]]'s *Phantasmal Killer*)
## Bond with Melani
Vayle's resurrection is owed to [[Melani]], and they pray to her during morning activities. Until Session 088, Melani was the source of their divine spells; after embracing The Apometi, Vayle's magic shifted entirely to primal, and divine spellcasting ended.
- **Resurrection origin**: Melani brought Vayle back; it wasn't their choice, but they choose to help the town fight
- **Daily devotion (pre-088)**: One other person could receive Melani's guidance via Vayle on her behalf
- **Possible revolution**: Defending their right to exist in the [[Dawnflower Library]] debate may be the *revolution* Melani wanted from them
- **Lost connection**: Since Session 088, no longer has access to divine spells
## The Apometi & Daskalos Role
In Session 070, during the defense of [[Arbor Felix]], Vayle accepted [[The Apometi]]'s blessing — completing the magical shift to primal in Session 088 and tying them formally to a victa.
- **Blessing effects**: Poison resistance, spider veins, the promise of becoming an [[Aponachar|aponachar]] upon death
- **Soil-sense**: Felt life return to the arena area after destroying undead and fleshwarps in Session 097; calming and grounding when walking barefoot
- **Monthly obligation**: Must return to the Apometi once a month
- **Victa**: [[Eleni Healer]] (chosen during the Arbor Felix defense)
- **Harmful auras (Session 106)**: Plants blessed by [[Gozreh]] hurt them slightly — a sign their undead nature is vulnerable to nature-deity-blessed areas
## The Voidseekers Infiltration
Vayle infiltrated [[Malik]]'s cult, [[The Voidseekers]], and successfully prevented them from summoning something or opening a portal in [[The Gauntlight]] — possibly at the cost of innocent cultists.
- **Cover concern**: Trying to figure out whether Malik is even real
- **Cult dreams**: Recurring dreams of Malik praising Vayle's usefulness — *"I'm proud of what you have done. We are now stronger... please continue meeting people, making alliances, and finding things we can exploit."*
- **Roscoe dream**: A dog named Roscoe revealed Vayle can't hide their true withered nature; Roscoe transformed into Malik wearing a Voidseekers cloak
- **Anchor revelation (Session 108)**: The Voidseekers used [[Zuhri]] as a summoning anchor, but Ash answered the call instead
## Werewolf Nature & Xal'garoth's Boon
Confirmed as a lycanthrope in Session 059, Vayle struggles with the full moon — Bond and Vayle have both required tying up, blindfolding, and gagging on full-moon nights. In Session 075, [[Xal'garoth - The Apex Beast]] offered them a choice.
- **Beast's offer**: Werewolf transformation at will *or* fey bloodline powers with enhanced illusion
- **Beast's message**: *"You are too preoccupied with what you were that you forget what you are."* And: *"You use words and illusions to protect life. But sometimes, direct action is needed."*
- **Vision of the wild**: Vayle running free as a beast in the wilderness, then turning back
## The Cailean Key & The Doomed Mark
The two heaviest current threads in Vayle's life — both arrived in late 2026.
- **Hidden Key revealed (Session 115)**: A warm tugging voice on Vayle's person traced to their dagger; the dormant [[Cailean Key]] had been hidden inside the hilt all along. It declared *"Ah, finally, I'm free!"* and named Vayle its new owner
- **Frees Siora**: Brandishing the Key at the real [[Siora Fallowglade]], Vayle counteracted [[Belcorra]]'s hold on her (rank 4, +19); the counteract incidentally lifted Vayle's own Stupefied condition
- **Insight on the Key's first wish (Session 116)**: The Key's lingering desire to "free Siora" actually meant freeing the *shadow still in Siora* — which is why their use of it worked the way it did
- **Refuses to free the metal eye**: When the Key urges Vayle to free a silent floating metal eye on Level 4, they say no — recognizing the difference between freeing a person and freeing a possibly-dangerous device
- **Doomed 1 (Session 113)**: Successfully broke [[Siora Fallowglade]]'s Red Mantis assassination contract using a religion check; gained *Doomed* 1 as a consequence — the energy that made Siora undead and bound transferred into Vayle. Will *not* be removed by a long rest
- **Source identified (Session 116)**: The mark is from [[Achaekek]], the Mantis God and lord of contracts — *not* a Divine Bane from Melani as [[Vandy Banderdash]] had thought. Siora, a Divine Assassin, said she could feel the mark of her god on Vayle
## Connection to Sythra
In Session 109, Vayle realized they had a shared past with the [[Graveknight Armor|Grave Knight]].
- **Past relationship**: Vayle used to complain to her about [[The Voidseekers]] and always felt she was sympathetic to them
- **True identity**: Called out her name — *Sythra* — causing her to stop briefly before walking away
- **Infiltration discovery**: Sythra had infiltrated [[Belcorra]]'s organization, *not* The Voidseekers
- **Fuller memories (Session 119)**: Vayle recalled that Sythra was a decorated commander in [[Absalom]]'s First Guard — the [[Eagle Garrison]] that protected [[Kortos]] from minotaurs, harpies, and centaurs — that she knew [[Otari]] and its people well, and that she was a mother. When Vayle's crew invited her to join the Voidseeker infiltration, she declined without explanation. The two were parallel operatives on similar missions and parted on good terms; Sythra seemed to be defending the region at a time when people believed the deeper threat under the Gauntlet was already over
- **Shared children (Session 120)**: Sythra's five children are also Vayle's — a secret Vayle has not yet shared with the party. Tracing Sythra's descendants led them to [[Maret]], a ghast washerwoman of Otari from that same line, who gave Vayle a hair spike of a design unique to Sythra's hometown
## Notable Capabilities
- **Magical tradition**: Now exclusively primal (since Session 088); previously had divine access via Melani
- **Curse removal**: Has a way to remove curses, but only on willing creatures — limits options for cursed objects like the [[Graveknight Armor]]
- **Charm & illusion**: Successfully charmed a [[Living Landslide]], used *Fascinate* and *Charm* on [[Zarmavdian]], pretended to be [[Otari Ilvashti]] convincingly
- **Healing support**: Reliable party healer; cured Ash to full after the Irnakurse persistent bleed; healed Zuhri repeatedly through the Gauntlight crawl
- **Vitality damage**: Used *Vitality Lance* to deal 29 vitality damage to the [[Mulventok]], causing it to explode
- **Disguise**: Disguised themself as a ratfolk pretending to be [[Skram]] when returning to Otari undercover
- **Identification**: Reliable knowledge on undead and curses — identified [[Black Frost Zombie]]s, the modified [[Black Frost]] curse on the [[Thri-Kreen]], the [[Graveknight Armor]] curse, [[poltergeists]], [[Tomb Jelly]] cursed splatter, and the *Doomed* condition itself
- **Linguistic**: Reads lips well enough to identify Necril from a Death Shepherd's silenced speech; understands Aklo and Necril for the [[Chafkem]] negotiations
- **Cailean Key bearer**: Now wields the Key as a primary tool
## Active Objectives
- **Survive the Doomed mark**: Find what Achaekek's bane on them actually does, and whether the [[The Red Mantis Assassins|Red Mantis]] ritual Siora mentioned can lift it
- **Hold the Cailean Key responsibly**: Decide what to free next — and what to leave bound
- **Lead Lazda's recovery**: Daily therapy continues
- **Protect [[Otari]]**: Particularly from anything tied to The Voidseekers
- **Decide on Xal'garoth's boon**: Werewolf-at-will or fey-illusion
- **Quietly serve Melani's purpose**: Whatever the *revolution* she wants from Vayle turns out to be
## Unresolved Questions
- Is Malik real, or is the cult and dream-figure Vayle's own construction?
- What does Achaekek actually intend with the Doomed mark — death, conscription, something else?
- Was Sythra's sympathy for The Voidseekers genuine, or part of her infiltration of Belcorra?
- Will the Pharasmins who walked out of the [[Dawnflower Library]] debate return as a problem?
- What lay behind the floating silent metal eye on Level 4 that the Key wanted freed?
- Is there a way to live openly as undead in Otari, or will the [[Pharasma|Pharasmins]] always force the issue?
## Relationships
- **Party**: [[Jaspen Bond Callistair|Bond]] (rules-clash but admiration), [[Zuhri]] (kindred outsider bond), [[Ashnefrotty|Ash]] (sworn protector — *"any aggression against Vayle is a declaration of war"*), [[Grumblebum|Grumble]] (Death Warden ally — *"Vayle is one of the good ones"*)
- **Allies**: [[Melani]] (resurrector, divine patron until 088), [[The Apometi]] (current source of magic), [[Eleni Healer]] (victa), [[Vandy Banderdash]] (cured the Black Frost curse and defended Vayle in the library debate), [[Aiden Court]] (knows Vayle is undead but allowed them to leave; status uncertain)
- **Enemies**: [[Belcorra]], [[Achaekek]] (via the Doomed mark), [[Malik]] / [[The Voidseekers]] (publicly), [[Jafaki]] (via Chafkem's contract)
## Notable Events Timeline
A condensed chronological view of major beats. Combat round-by-round detail removed; preserved in the session notes themselves.
- **Session 056** — *Guilt of The Huntress*: Disguises as [[Otari Ilvashti]]; convinces [[Esefna Menhemes]] that [[Vol Rajani]] is killing people; identifies that [[The Huntress]] is hexed and would never reach the afterlife
- **Session 057** — *Berry Bush*: Successfully convinces [[Dot Rajani]] to come along; trades an elixir with [[Berry Bush]] for a healing-potion-equivalent berry
- **Session 058** — *Werewolf Woodland*: Confirmed lycanthrope; tried to link spirits with [[Karsh]] but was refused
- **Session 059** — *Wild Animals*: Werewolf transformation in the forest near [[Absalom]]

- **Session 067** — *Cult Reveal*: Revealed the Voidseekers infiltration to the party; both Bond and Vayle failed to resist the full-moon transformation
- **Session 070** — *Apometi Blessing*: Accepted The Apometi's offer; chose [[Eleni Healer]] as victa; used deception to lure werewolves away from villagers

- **Session 088** — *Magical Shift*: Divine → primal; lost Melani's spells; began Lazda's therapy
- **Session 095–096** — *Aiden Court*: Healing accident kills Siora; Court witnesses Vayle taking damage from the *Heal* spell, learns they are undead, lets them leave
- **Session 100** — *Library Debate*: Argues their right to exist; Pharasmins storm out; [[Pharasma|Pharasmins]] who walked out will return at some point

- **Session 107** — *Graveknight Identification*: Identifies the Seaweed Knight as [[Graveknight Armor]] and recognizes its curse interaction with the [[Black Hollow Curse]]
- **Session 108** — *Nhimbaloth Lore*: Nat-20 religion check reveals [[Nhimbaloth]]'s gaze upon the Gauntlight causes permanent death in the affected area
- **Session 109** — *Sythra Reveal*: Calls out Sythra's name; goes down in the Mutalisk room and is rescued by Bond
- **Session 113** — *Contract Broken*: Breaks Siora's Red Mantis contract; gains *Doomed* 1 — the Divine Bane that turns out to be Achaekek's mark
- **Session 115** — *Cailean Key Awakens*: Pulls the Key from their dagger; frees the real Siora
- **Session 116** — *Source Identified*: Pieces together that the *Doomed* mark is Achaekek's, not Melani's; refuses to free the floating metal eye
- **Session 117** — *Therapy & Refused Rebirth*: Continued daily therapy with [[Lazda Venkervale|Lazda]] — learned Lazda was Otari's gravedigger near the [[Dawnflower Library]] before his attack and that he senses *the shape of something larger* on him, but he regressed without progress. Declined Zuhri's offered [[Rebirth potion]]
- **Session 118** — *Roseguard Research*: While [[Jaspen Bond Callistair|Bond]] projected the soul-gem eye's memories, Vayle recognized that a tortured victim's clothing dated to an *older era*, confirming the eye had operated for a very long time. Later researched [[The Roseguard]] at the [[Dawnflower Library]], learning that [[Otari Ilvashti|Otari]] loved [[Esefna Menhemes|Esefna]], that he was a pirate turned laughing liberator and the heart of the group, and that his [[Cailean Key]] once let him free the restrained, confused, paralyzed, or frightened with a single word — a power the Key cannot yet replicate in Vayle's hands
- **Session 119** — *Remembering Sythra*: Recalled more of [[Graveknight Armor|Sythra]]'s past — her command of the [[Eagle Garrison]] in [[Absalom]]'s First Guard, her role as a mother who knew [[Otari]] well, and her refusal to join the Voidseeker infiltration despite being a parallel operative who parted with Vayle on good terms
- **Session 120** — *Maret the Ghast*: Now carries the revelation that Sythra's five children are also Vayle's (not yet told the party). Asked the elderly [[Brelda Venkervale]] about Sythra and was led to [[Maret]], a reclusive washerwoman who turned out to be a ghast descended from Sythra's line. Bonded with Maret over both feeling ugly and being undead outsiders, received a hair spike of Sythra's hometown design as proof of lineage, and offered Maret the [[Rebirth potion]] — staying inside her hut through the eight-hour transformation while the party kept watch
- **Session 121** — *Maret's Rebirth*: When [[Maret]]'s completed transformation into a [[Sarangai]] collapsed her hut, Vayle took bludgeoning damage and helped haul her free with [[Grumblebum|Grumble]], only to take psychic damage from the pulsing soul-gem in Maret's forehead as werewolves closed in under the full moon
- **Session 122** — *Holding the Line*: As the werewolf brawl raged on around the still-vulnerable Maret (dropped to Dying 3), Vayle healed [[Grumblebum|Grumble]] for 34 HP
- **Session 123** — *Fight's End*: The werewolf brawl ended and the reverted [[The Gallowhops|Gallowhops]] proved to be seeking [[Zuhri]] as the Blessed Wolf. [[Maret]] — whom Vayle had reborn — survived and was revealed to be a Psychic; the party grew wary of letting her rejoin society after her explosive psychic attack
- **Session 124** — *Allies and a Breakthrough*: Back in [[Otari]], a grateful [[Captain Lardus Longsaddle]] — reunited with his mother [[Aumagh Longsaddle]] — agreed to be an **ally should the Pharasmins come for Vayle**, and [[Brelda Venkervale]] pledged her support too (noting that before her son got sick, [[Lazda Venkervale|Lazda]] would have been the one to convince). Vayle's daily therapy finally **broke through**: after a nightmare about a **creature with seven eyes**, Vayle calmed Lazda down, and he said he now feels able to face what happened to him using the techniques Vayle taught him. Then a **paper spider** — the same tome-paper tied to [[Chafkem]]'s mummy ritual — was spotted in the room with them
## Equipment
- A key from [[Otari Ilvashti]] that allows casting *Freedom of movement* once per day; gives a tug toward the lighthouse barrier and weakens it when passed through
- [Moonlit Chain](https://app.demiplane.com/nexus/pathfinder2e/items/moonlit-chain-rm) — gift from [[Hearthmother Saesella]]
- Their dagger — formerly held the dormant [[Cailean Key]]
- One of five **Pentagram Shards** received from [[Szek]] (set: [[Aulr]], [[Zarglagon]], [[Azvalvigander]], [[Barcumbuk]], [[Yagyan]], possibly [[Gateforgers]]); together they unlock the western pentagram door in the devil staging hall ([[112_20260404 The Pentagram Shards]])
- [[Cailean Key]] (active, since Session 115)
