# [[psychopomps]]
Psychopomps are divine creatures connected to death that have always brought souls to the boneyard where they are judged by [[Pharasma]]. They are the creatures responsible for guiding souls in their journey between life and death.
## Types of Psychopomps
### Asoi
The [[asoi]] are heralds between death and life. They appear when a soul crosses over or back, serving as intermediaries in the transition between the mortal realm and the afterlife.
## Role in Karsh's Rebirth
During the events of [[048_20230909 The Duskwalker Awakening]], a dozen black birds with masks appeared around [[Karsh]] as [[Gloam]] prayed to Pharasma. These were psychopomps who had come to witness Karsh's transformation from undead to [[Duskwalkers|Duskwalker]]. The birds formed a spiral and the topmost birds disappeared, indicating the successful completion of the divine ritual that restored Karsh's soul and granted him a new purpose as a protector of the boundary between life and death.
## Historical Significance
Two great psychopomps in history made a deal: there are some souls worth saving because their lives ended prematurely. However, they cannot allow endless numbers of souls to become [[Duskwalkers|Duskwalkers]], maintaining the delicate balance between life and death.
